Au pair" is an originally french expression and means a mutual relation between a young woman or man and a host family. The au pair placement is an agreement : the au pair girl spends some time in a host family, as a guest, to learn a new language. The family offers her accommodation and meals. In exchange, she has to take care of the children and to provide some help for some light house chores. Working as an au pair is the best solution to discover another culture and learn a language at a very low cost.

 

 

Conditions:

Au pair conditions in France, Britain, Spain and Germany (and indeed, the rest of the European Union) are fairly similar. Indeed, many EU countries have signed the European Agreement on Au Pair Placement which states that the au pair shall :

• Receive board & lodging from the receiving family and, where possible, shall ocupy a separate room.
• Be given adequate time to attend language courses.
• Have at least one full free day per week, not less than one such free day in every month being a Sunday, and shall have full opportunity to take part in religious worship.
• Receive a certain sum of money, as pocket money, the amount of which and the intervals at which it is paid shall be determined by the agreement signed by the family & the au pair.

In exchange, the au pair is expected to:

• Work about 5 hours per day, looking after the children and doing light housework.
• Baby-sitting the evening once or twice a week.
• 'Pocket money' rates are around 50 £ per week in the UK, and between 50 to 75 euros a week in eurozone countries (amounts vary per country and per hours worked). In general the posts are only open to young girls, aged between 17 to 30 years old.

 

 

 

 

Some families will accept males as au pairs, particularly if their children are all boys, but there tend to be less available positions. Most au pair placements tend to be for a minimum of 6 months, although some au pair agencies do offer shorter placements during the summer months.

Italy

The Euroma association screen their host families carefully. They will do their best to arrange a good match for you. Euroma will care for you during your whole au pair- stay in Italy. If problems or questions occur, you can always contact them. Euroma is also available outside office hours on their emergency hotline. If you don't feel comfortable with your host family, Euroma will try to solve problems or misunderstandings. In case this is impossible, Euroma will try to find you another host family within a two weeks period. (This is only possible, if you have not violated any au pair- rules!). Euroma organizes interesting au pair meetings. These meetings will enable you to exchange your experiences with other au pairs, to find new friends and to have an eventful.

United Kingdom

As a member of IAPA, we collaborate also in England with agencies members of BAPAA. An au pair who is placed in collaboration with a member agency of the British Au Pair Agencies Association enjoys a long list of benefits. All BAPAA members work closely with reputable partner agencies all over Europe to make sure an au pair is both vetted and prepared in their own country prior to departure to the UK.

 

A BAPAA agency assists with the careful matching of an au pair to vetted families in Britain. Many agencies look after the same host families year after year; they know the families well and this ensures successful and safe placements.

If you need to perfect your English and you have some experience of looking after children we do have many positions all over UK : London, Manchester, Brighton….. Au pair conditions in Uk are similar to the rest of Europe. Your host-family will promise to give you enough free time during the day for English classes, meeting your friends, exploring London…..

Ireland

Working as a Nanny/Au Pair in Ireland:

Being a nanny or Au-Pair in Ireland means a temporary working stay with an Irish host family in order to improve your knowledge of the English language and the culture, customs and people of Ireland. Working as an Au-Pair abroad is not a holiday - it demands strength, perseverance and adaptability. During their homestay, Au-Pairs are expected to mind children, do some light housework and attend two evenings of English classes per week. The rewards are great. If you succeed and study well, you will not only improve your English but also become more mature and independent.

 

Staying with an Irish Family:

Our Irish families are carefully selected and most are experienced in employing Au-Pairs. Average pocket money is 100 euro per week. If a student Au Pair has to take a bus or train to class this will be subsidised by the family. Our families are mainly in Dublin, Cork..

Germany and Austria

As an au pair in Germany/Austria, you help your hostfamily 30 hours per week to look after their children and to do light housework. As counterpart, you will be integrated into family life and you will receive free board, lodging and some pocket-money.

 

You will:

• improve your knowledge of the german language
• experience a foreign country
• prepare yourself for further education and your professional future
• learn to know Germany and the German way of life
• shapen your personality and become independent
• make contacts and find new friends

Required qualifications:

• You are 18 to 24 years old (citizens of the EU to 30 years)
• You are unmarried and have no children
• You have a good knowledge of German (exception: citizens from the EU or from English speaking countries)
• You have gained sufficient experience in childcare (minimum of 2 references like regular babysitting, practice in a kindergarten or another social institution)
• You know how to do daily housework
• You are prepared to adapt to your hostfamily's daily life.

Spain

The young “Au-Pair” will work looking after the children of the house where will live and helping in light tasks of the house, as passing the vacuum cleaner, making beds, etc… You will receive a treat as one member more of the family, full board and lodging and you will receive a pocket money. Your will have your own bedroom and at least 1 full day off per week. The nationalities that the families prefer are Irish, English, German and French girls. Although we have sometimes families who demand other nationalities. The following “Au-Pair” conditions are regulated by the “Youth Europe Council” and by Spanish Law of 1988. To come to Spain as “Au-Pair” is necessary an invitation letter from the family and passport. In last term will prevail what the family and the “Au-Pair” decide between them.

 

For it, we recommend to interchange the maximum information you will be able before you came to Spain so surely you will have a successfully experience. The ages allowed in Spain to work as “Au-Pair” are between 18 and 30 years old and the duration of the stay is 6-12 months. In summer you can apply for 2- 3 months. Placements in August are always difficult because the Spanish families use to be on holidays.

 

If you want to work as “Au-Pair” in Spain, you must have a basic knowledge of Spanish, so you will be able to have a phone call with the host family and you could talk about your arrival date and duties, before you leave your country, and be able to express yourself in an emergency case. Once you are in Spain we can help you to find a language school to improve your Spanish and meet other foreign people or other au-pairs. We suggest you going to Spanish classes to get involved in the Spanish culture. This will help you having a better stay in Spain. All the “Au-Pairs” who came to Spain must have a medical insurance for accidents and illness.

 

All European Countries have a Social Security, please take information yourself about it previously your departure and make sure you are taking all the suitable documents with you. Two months before the date you would like to come to Spain, we need to receive by post all this information written in Spanish. Families are located all over Spain : Madrid, Barcelona, Andalusia, etc…

Discover France's rich culture firsthand by living and working in Paris, the City of Light. Home to the Musée du Louvre and Musée d'Orsay, the Tour Eiffel, Arc de Triomphe, and Notre-Dame, there is no shortage of sights to see! Positions are also available in Britany, south of France : Nice, Cannes, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Lyon, Normandy, Lille… Au pairs in France provide a maximum of 30 hours of childcare per week, and may be asked to baby-sit in the evenings, but no more than 2 times per week.
